Markets end on a flat note ahead of the Budget; session was volatile The markets opened in the positive but soon slipped into the red and traded in a range before finally closing on a flat note. While the Sensex closed down 1.51 points or 0.01% at 17,824.48, the Nifty gained 16.7 points or 0.32% to close at 5285.10. Broadmarket indices too ended flat as the BSE Midcap and Smallcap indices were down 0.15% and 0.06% respectively. The market breadth was negative as A/D ratio was 9:10 on the BSE. NSE cash turnover was Rs.14576.82cr vs. Rs. 13305.19cr on Friday.

Sectorally, it was a mixed bag. The BSE Metal, Healthcare and Auto indices were themajor gainers. Gainers from the index pivotals included Hindalco, Bajaj Auto, HDFC, M&M and BHEL. Major losers from the BSE-30 were DLF, SBI, Reliance and Rel Energy.

With tomorrow being the Budget day, markets could once again be volatile. We recommend a cautious approach on fresh positions till we have more clarity on market direction.
